Moffat Tournament Magic

The Junior Rams welcomed 300 young players from across southern Scotland for the 2016 Moffat Junior Tournament. Teams from Annan, Biggar, Dumfries, Peebles, Stewartry and Moffat competed in a fantastic day of rugby.

It was perfect weather not too hot, broken sunshine and dry. A note of thanks to Moffat Fire Brigade for spraying the pitches to soften them up following the run of dry weather. The day was perfectly set and the young players had a great time. Everyone enjoyed terrific games of rugby played in great spirit.

In the Micros section it was Peebles who dominated with Peebles A and Peebles B competing in the final with the B team winning 4 tries to 3. The player of the tournament at this level was Arran Kerr from Annan.

The P4 contest was closely fought between Moffat and Biggar with the home team running out winners in the final 7 to 6, much to the delight of their coach, birthday boy Sandy Turner. The player of the tournament for P4 went to Ruarhi Watson from Biggar.

For the P5s it was an all Dumfries final and Dumfries A were the winners with 6 tries to 3. P5 player of the tournament was Chris Thompson from Peebles.

The P6/7 contest was extremely close. Moffat had a good start against Annan, but the trophy was fought out between Dumfries, Biggar and Peebles. Eventually a very tight final saw Peebles win in a nail-biting extra time golden try against Dumfries, which also meant Peebles won the overall tournament trophy, the John Birrel Quaich. In a split decision the players of the tournament for P/6/7 went to Tom Roper from Biggar and Tom Currie from Dumfries.

There were many stand out players for Moffat, who competed well, but the Sam Leask Trophy for the Moffat player of the tournament went to Olly Barnard in the victorious P4 team.

Many thanks to all the parents and supporters for making it such a fantastic day. Particular thanks goes to those helping with refreshments, the BBQ, as well as the coaches and referees. They all helped to make the tournament a great success
